The incident took place around 10:22 p.m., Wednesday, March 31 when an individual was trespassing in Holyoke and came into contact with Amtrak Valley Flyer Train 494 traveling between New Haven and Greenfield, said Jason Abrams, a spokesperson for Amtrak.
There were no reported injuries to passengers on board or crew members, he added.
The Amtrak Police Department has been working with local law enforcement to investigate.
Abrams did not comment on whether the person was killed.
"This incident is a critical reminder to the public about the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings," he said
Each year, approximately 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossings and trespassing incidents nationwide, Abrams said.
